Understanding High Definition

What is HD?

Glad you asked. HD is short for high definition. How high, you wonder? HD features six times the resolution of standard resolution and superior sound over traditional formats. With picture and audio this intense, you don’t just watch HD, you live it.

But you can’t achieve the true high-definition experience unless each of your components is HD. Here’s a rundown of what you’ll need.

HD TV

If you want to behold the incredible resolution of an HD signal, you need an HD TV. While HD TVs technically begin at 720p resolution, you should look for an HD TV capable of displaying at least 1080i or, ideally, 1080p. This will ensure that you’re experiencing the highest possible resolution.

HD Cable or Satellite Service

Having HD digital cable or satellite TV doesn’t mean you’re automatically experiencing high definition programming. You’ll have to contact your cable or satellite provider to make sure your subscribing to their HD service, which usually requires a special set-top box.

HD DVD Movies

HD DVD movies deliver up to six times the resolution of standard DVDs as well as stunning surround sound. They also offer exclusive interactive features that you can’t find on ordinary DVDs.

HD DVD Player

For the best picture and sound possible (1080p), you’ll need an HD DVD movie player that plays HD DVD movies. An HD DVD player can also play back your old DVDs at an "upconverted" resolution and even play your audio CDs.

HD Cables

To do this right, you need cables that can deliver the high-definition signals to the screen. HDMI™ or component video cables are the right choices for HD DVD or for your HD satellite or cable programming.

Surround Sound

Better picture begs for better sound. So make sure you’ve got an amplifier and speaker set capable of delivering 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound.

HD DVD Laptop

You can now enjoy incredible picture quality on the go with a line of HD DVD-enabled laptops. These units also have component or HDMI™ outputs so you can connect to any HDTV. Four of the five top PC manufacturers are offering laptops and PCs that can play HD DVDs.

Xbox 360 HD DVD Player

Hook up an HD DVD drive to your Xbox 360™, and experience the only thing missing from your perfect score: the ability to watch HD DVD movies in amazing high-definition.
